As an interesting fact: the sphere of the Hungarian royal scepter was also made of rock crystal and lions were carved into it, and the first vision correction lenses were also polished from rock crystal.
The ancient Greeks believed that rock crystals were formed from water that had frozen into insoluble ice in the freezing cold of the high peaks of the Alps. That is why it was called crystalline, i.e. petrified ice.
